CHAPTER SEVEN
âADDIE?â
Addie glanced up to find Flynn scratching a hand through his hair. âYes?â she said, instead of now demanding the ex-wife story. Sheâd asked for it because sheâd hoped itâd cool the heat stampeding through her blood. Sheâd wanted him to kiss her so badly her fingers had ached with it. She still did.
âI understand how heartbreaking it mustâve been to have lost your friend.â
She snapped away to stare out at the square with all of its Christmas glory, but the lights and festivities had lost their charm. Did he understand? Really? She thought of his face and how it had come alive when heâd described his father and thought that maybe he did.
It didnât change the fact that she didnât want to talk about Robbie. Not to him. Not to anyone. All of them had triedâMum and Dad, Jeannie and Frank, even Robbieâs mum and dadâbut some things went too deep. Besides, what was there to say? Robbie was gone. Sheâd died far too young. End of story. Nothing any of them could do would bring her back. So she didnât answer Flynn now.
âBut,â he said.
She stiffened. But? No buts! She glared at him to indicate the conversation was over.
âBut,â he repeated, evidently oblivious to her silent signals. âHow old were the pair of you when you made these plans?â
âWhatâs that got to do with anything?â
âSixteen?â
âWeâd been making travel plans since we were twelve.â He just stared at her. She glared and shrugged. âThese particular plans?â The particular itinerary Addie meant to follow? She shrugged. âNearly seventeen.â That ânearlyâ mattered. Every single day had mattered.
âYou were only children.â
âAnd, again, whatâs that got to do with anything? We were on the cusp of adulthood.â And talking about that itinerary had fired Robbie with enthusiasm, with the desire to get well, with hope.
âYou made a plan to see the world at sixteen, which you turned into a pact at eighteen. The point I want to make is that you can fit that promise into your life the way you see it now rather than how you viewed it then.â
What on earth?
âLike ninety-nine per cent of teenagers the world over, you dreamed of independence and getting away from school, home and all the usual restraints. What could be more attractive and exciting than descending upon Europe? What youâre not factoring in, however, is the way your world is now, the way your life has changed.â
âIâm not sure what youâre getting at.â Her stomach scrunched up tight. âAnd frankly, Flynn, Iâm not sure Iâm interested.â
His eyes narrowed. âJust for a moment letâs imagine Robbie had lived. Youâre both nineteen and about to embark on a working holiday around Europe for a year.â
That wasnât hard to imagine. Sheâd imagined it a thousand times. It didnât stop Flynnâs words from tearing something inside her.
âBefore you can leave, however, your mum gets sick and you have to stay at home to help look after her and the farm. Would Robbie have held that
