CHAPTER SEVEN

‘ADDIE?’

Addie glanced up to find Flynn scratching a hand through his hair. ‘Yes?’ she said, instead of now demanding the ex-wife story. She’d asked for it because she’d hoped it’d cool the heat stampeding through her blood. She’d wanted him to kiss her so badly her fingers had ached with it. She still did.

‘I understand how heartbreaking it must’ve been to have lost your friend.’

She snapped away to stare out at the square with all of its Christmas glory, but the lights and festivities had lost their charm. Did he understand? Really? She thought of his face and how it had come alive when he’d described his father and thought that maybe he did.

It didn’t change the fact that she didn’t want to talk about Robbie. Not to him. Not to anyone. All of them had tried—Mum and Dad, Jeannie and Frank, even Robbie’s mum and dad—but some things went too deep. Besides, what was there to say? Robbie was gone. She’d died far too young. End of story. Nothing any of them could do would bring her back. So she didn’t answer Flynn now.

She stiffened. But? No buts! She glared at him to indicate the conversation was over.

‘What’s that got to do with anything?’

‘Sixteen?’

‘We’d been making travel plans since we were twelve.’ He just stared at her. She glared and shrugged. ‘These particular plans?’ The particular itinerary Addie meant to follow? She shrugged. ‘Nearly seventeen.’ That ‘nearly’ mattered. Every single day had mattered.

‘You were only children.’

‘And, again, what’s that got to do with anything? We were on the cusp of adulthood.’ And talking about that itinerary had fired Robbie with enthusiasm, with the desire to get well, with hope.

‘You made a plan to see the world at sixteen, which you turned into a pact at eighteen. The point I want to make is that you can fit that promise into your life the way you see it now rather than how you viewed it then.’

What on earth?

‘Like ninety-nine per cent of teenagers the world over, you dreamed of independence and getting away from school, home and all the usual restraints. What could be more attractive and exciting than descending upon Europe? What you’re not factoring in, however, is the way your world is now, the way your life has changed.’

‘I’m not sure what you’re getting at.’ Her stomach scrunched up tight. ‘And frankly, Flynn, I’m not sure I’m interested.’

His eyes narrowed. ‘Just for a moment let’s imagine Robbie had lived. You’re both nineteen and about to embark on a working holiday around Europe for a year.’

That wasn’t hard to imagine. She’d imagined it a thousand times. It didn’t stop Flynn’s words from tearing something inside her.

‘Before you can leave, however, your mum gets sick and you have to stay at home to help look after her and the farm. Would Robbie have held that
